CONCORD, N.C. (May 14, 2003) - Miller Lite Team Penske Dodge driver Rusty Wallace says he and his Bill Wilburn-led Penske Racing South Team are really looking to "rock and roll" in this weekend's The Winston all-star NASCAR Winston Cup race at Lowe's Motor Speedway. "When they ask me about my racing, my favorite music or just what it takes to have a good time, it seems like I'm always using the phrase, 'Let's rock and roll,'" said Wallace, long known for his penchant for all three activities. "Well this weekend, we'll be having the best of all worlds. We've got a super hot rod ready and are looking forward to jamming with them for that million bucks that's on the line. The Goo Goo Dolls are ready to get the place really cranked up on Saturday and we'll be rockin' & rollin' with their colors on our car the whole weekend." Perhaps an interpretation of Wallace's statements is fitting here. Wallace, who won the 1989 edition of The Winston en route to the series championship that year, will be racing one of his strongest cars at Lowe's Motor Speedway this weekend, the "PC-51." The car debuted in the Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis last August with a second-place finish. Wallace also finished second with the car at Phoenix last fall. It was raced most recently at California Speedway last month, where Wallace led with only 12 laps remaining, but fell to a third-place finish. This year's edition of the annual all-star race will see the winner pocket a minimum $1 million on Saturday night. The 90-lap, 135-mile race (run in three segments of 40 laps, 30 laps and 20 laps) offers a format that guarantees excitement. As part of the Miller Time Live Rock 'n' Racing Series program presented by Wallace's major sponsor, Miller Brewing Co., popular recording artists the Goo Goo Dolls will be featured in concert at 3:00 p.m. Saturday on the stage located between turns one and two in the infield of the track. Wallace will be on stage to officially introduce the band to the large crowd expected. The group will also perform a 10-minute set later in the evening in between the preliminary and featured races. In a special promotion for
the race, Wallace's Dodge Intrepid will carry a special color scheme
honoring the Goo Goo Dolls, the band formed in Buffalo, NY, in 1985
by guitarist/vocalist Johnny Rzeznik, bassist Robby Takac and drummer
Mike Malinin. To date, the group has released nine albums including
its latest "Gutterflower," released by Warner Bros. Records,
which includes their popular new single, "Here Is Gone." "With so much going on, it doesn't get any better than this," said Wallace, whose overall record in The Winston sports the one win along with five top-five finishes and nine top-10s in the 16 all-star events he has competed in to date. "It's gonna' be a helluva' weekend and we can't wait to crank it up." The Winston activity at Lowe's Motor Speedway cranks up with Friday practice at 2:20 p.m. The 7:05 p.m. qualifying session will see the competitors run three laps with a four-tire pit stop fit in during their time against the clock. Saturday night's preliminary events begin at 6:00 p.m., with Winston Cup Series competition (The Winston Open) beginning at 7:30 p.m. The 19th running of the prestigious The Winston all-star race is scheduled to start at 9:00 p.m. EDT and features live coverage by FX-TV and MRN Radio.
