CONCORD, N.C. (May 6, 2003) - The latest news from Miller Lite Team Penske Dodge driver Rusty Wallace and his Bill Wilburn-led Penske Racing South crew: RICHMOND HIGHLIGHTS - ANOTHER TOP-10 FINISH: Okay, so he wasn't successful in winning in his 600th consecutive Winston Cup start and his victory drought was extended to 73 races, but Miller Lite Team Penske Dodge driver Rusty Wallace was able to bring a lot of positive out of last Saturday night's Pontiac Excitement 400 at Richmond International Raceway. "We were much stronger than 10th, but at least it was another top-10 finish," said Wallace of his third consecutive top-10 tally. "We had a top-five car for sure and got caught up in the deal with the 22, 12, 29 and 30 cars (lap 268 crash which damaged the right front of Wallace's Dodge). It knocked the toe-in out all to crap and Billy (Wilburn, crew chief) and the guys really busted their tails to get it fixed. We came out the last car on the lead lap - way back in the 28th spot - and made our way back up to 10th before the rain came. It was pretty cool coming back up through there. I had Billy, Earl (Barban, spotter) and Roger (Penske, team owner) all coaching me picking 'em off one car at a time. When the rain came, we were sitting there in 10th, but I told the guys that if the race went back to green, we had a strong enough hot rod and enough laps left to knock off four or five of those guys in front of us. We never went back to green and had to settle for 10th, but I told 'em after the race that I feel certain we could have gotten back up into the top-five. That thing was flying there at the end of the race. It's a shame that we couldn't have shown how really strong that new little piece was. "There's a lot of good that came out of that race," Wallace offered. "We were trying some new setups and I think we know what works well at that track now. I'm confident we can go back there in the fall and pick up from where we left off. "We were the highest finishing Dodge in the race and we moved into the top 10 in the points for the first time this season," said Wallace, now ninth in the standings (with 1,274 points and 345 behind leader Matt Kenseth). "With the strength we've been showing over the last several weeks, we're on a roll and that feels good going into Charlotte Speed Weeks (The Winston and Coca-Cola 600 race weekends at Lowe's Motor Speedway). Wallace is also the highest-ranking Dodge driver in the current point standings. DID HE LEAD, OR NOT?
"Billy and the guys put another one of their 'mojo-killer' pit stops (15.090-second) on 'em and we came out right behind the pace car," explained Wallace, who officially did not lead any laps to pick up bonus points. "I really thought we won the battle out of the pits - I knew it was close, but I thought we beat the 18 car (Bobby Labonte) out. They (NASCAR officials) looked at the tape and said that it was the 18 and then the No. 2 car, so I let him go on by. It was closer than just tight right there at the line at the end of pit road, I'll tell you that - just inches they said. Anyhow, we got caught up in the mess with the 30 car (Jeff Green's lap 268 crash) a few laps later and never had the chance to lead the thing and pick up the bonus points." CARS AND COLORS FOR LOWE'S
SPEED WEEKS 2003: "The 'Goo Goo' car for The Winston will be the 51 car," Wilburn said of their Dodge Intrepid that will bear a special color scheme featuring the popular rock band the Goo Goo Dolls who are scheduled to perform at the track on race day. "Then we'll come back with the 43 car the next week for the 600. Maybe we can put the 'Goo Goo Voodoo' on 'em the first week and come back and really smoke 'em all with the 43 the next week." The PC-51 is the car that
debuted at Indy last August with a second-place finish. Wallace also
finished second with the car at Phoenix last fall. It was last raced
at California two weeks ago where Wallace led with only 12 laps remaining,
but fell to a third-place finish. Wallace debuted the PC-43 at Lowe's
in last year's Coca-Cola 600. His best finish to date with the car is
a third at Kansas last September.
