Rusty
Wallace to Design Speedway (Des Moines, Iowa - June 20, 2003) One of the most popular racecar drivers in America, Rusty Wallace, has entered into a consulting agreement and will help lead the team in the first-ever driver-designed speedway. Wallace, who completed his 600th consecutive start this year, will fuel the success of a proposed speedway as part of The U.S. MotorSport Entertainment Corporation's planned complex in Newton, Iowa. He was in nearby Des Moines this week, beginning his services as a consultant to the project. The asphalt track will have 25,000 permanent seats with the option of adding 20,000 more temporary seats. Beyond the anticipated hosting of ASA, USAC and ARCA (Automobile Racing Club of America)-sanctioned speedway events, the complex will also offer entertainment opportunities. "We're reaching for the pinnacle of racing thrills for drivers and fans alike," says Wallace. "I have a desire to build a state-of-the-art intermediate length speedway based on my years of racing these tracks and all that I've learned and liked or didn't like about each track. I plan to be deeply involved, from beginning to end," says Wallace. "When my peers get out of their cars and claim this track to be the best they've ever experienced, that will be my satisfaction. I want to hear them say, 'Man, that was the most exciting track I've ever run on.' When fans can see the ultimate nose-to-tail, door-to-door driving because of the track's layout, then that will be a victory, too." U.S MotorSport Chairman, President and CEO Paul R. Schlaack has announced that Rusty Wallace, 46, of Charlotte, North Carolina, will serve as ongoing consultant for the Corporation and be actively involved with the Corporation as it builds the track and motorsport entertainment complex. Schlaack says, "Rusty Wallace provides unique insight as the nation's foremost expert on the this type of track. With his record of winning approximately 40 percent of all races on tracks of similar length and countless other titles and wins, no one has this breadth of knowledge. We believe this is the first national racecar driver to ever design a speedway. We're also pleased to bring a Midwest native home to build the Iowa economy. He's a true hero to thousands of racing fans for his skills, his long-held record of victories and for his integrity. " Rusty Wallace drives the #2 Miller Lite Dodge Intrepid on the Winston Cup Circuit. Wallace began his Winston Cup career in 1980 driving for Roger Penske and is 24 percent owner of Penske Racing South today. He has won a total of 54 Winston Cup races and 35 pole positions. He has been voted the NMPA (National MotorSports Press Association) Driver of the Year twice. He had won 16 consecutive Winston Cup seasons, the third longest streak of any driver in the history of the sport. Wallace has won approximately ten percent of all his Winston Cup NASCAR races. Wallace was inducted into the Missouri Hall of Fame in 1998. Growing up in the St. Louis area, Rusty Wallace started racing cars as a teenager, winning more than 200 feature races from 1974 to 1978. He joined the USAC (United States Auto Club) stock car division in 1979, winning the USAC Rookie of the Year Award. Wallace won the ASA (American Speed Association) Championship in 1983 and claimed the Winston Cup Rookie of the Year title in 1984. The proposed $30 million complex has received significant support from Newton, Iowa City Council, which has approved a development agreement, including a city contribution of $9 million, an additional $1.3 million economic development grant for purchasing a 226-acre tract and more than $7 million for public improvements. |
