MILLER LITE TEAM
PENSKE DRIVER RUSTY WALLACE: FONTANA, Calif. (April 23, 2003) - Miller Lite Team Penske Dodge driver Rusty Wallace knows that it has been 71 races since his last NASCAR Winston Cup victory. The 1989 series champion and 54-race winner is aware that his most recent win came almost two years ago (on April 29, 2001) at California Speedway, on the same 2.0-mile track that plays host to this weekend's Auto Club 500. He knows all the hard facts extremely well, but he also wants to make sure that all the details are known. "Oh yeah, we're well aware that it's been a helluva long time since our last win, but we're determined and committed to get back to Victory Lane," said Wallace, who started 10th and finished eighth in last year's race at the Fontana, Calif., facility. "What keeps us pumped up with the adrenaline flowing and not letting all the frustration get to us is the fact that we've been competitive and should have won several races since then. "It's not like we just faded away and fell off the radar screen," said Wallace, currently 15th in the Winston Cup point standings entering this weekend's event, the 10th of 36 races on the 2003 tour. "We've been up there running competitively on a regular basis. We know that if you can keep on running as strong as we have, we'll get back in the win column." Wallace's statistics since his last win certainly back his claim to have been competitive during that period. During the 71-race period, Wallace has recorded 13 top-five finishes which include four seconds, two thirds and three fourths. His record during that span has produced a total of 27 top-10 finishes and shows that he has led laps in 20 of those races. "Like I said, it's not like we just laid down, rolled over and played dead," said Wallace. "We've been there ready to strike on several occasions, but for one reason or another came up a little short. I guess you could say that we've been the 'woulda-coulda-shoulda' kings pretty much since our last win. "I'll tell you what, it's just so doggone hard to win these things these days," said Wallace, a top-10 finisher in each of the last three California Speedway races. "A perfect example is the Rockingham race earlier this year (2/23 Subway 400) where we checked out on the field and led two-thirds of the race and only got a sixth-place finish out of it. "Things have changed so much with harder tires, the aero package importance and all, that it's a helluva accomplishment to pull off a win. Having great pit stops and the right strategy in the pits has never been more important. "It's quite incredible that we're heading into this weekend with nine different winners in the nine races we've had so far," Wallace concluded. "But that's proof of how tough the competition is. There's nothing we'd like better than to be the 10th different winner this weekend at Fontana." This weekend's schedule
at California Speedway sees a two-hour practice session from 11:20 a.m.
till 1:20 p.m. leading up to a 3:00 p.m. qualifying session for all
43 starting positions. Saturday's final "happy hour" practice
