LAS VEGAS -- (Feb. 26, 2002)
Miller Lite Team Penske driver Rusty Wallace may have an unfair advantage
this weekend as stock car racing's premier series visits "The Entertainment
Capital of the World." He'll have a special "co-pilot."
As part of the Elvis Presley 25th Anniversary program, 1989 NASCAR Winston
Cup Champion Rusty Wallace will have Elvis "riding along with him"
in this weekend's UAW Daimler Chrysler 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway,
just north of "The City of Lights."
"I'm thrilled to be part of this tribute to the acknowledged King
of Rock & Roll," said Wallace, a 54-race winner entering this
weekend. "We had Elvis riding with us on our Miller Lite Ford Taurus
back during the inaugural race at Las Vegas in 1998. We led a bunch of
laps in that race (three times for a total of 40 laps) and were strong
enough to comehome third. That was our strongest Vegas run to date. We
want to take Elvis with us to Victory Lane this time around.
"We didn't test at Las Vegas, but Ryan (Newman, teammate and driver
of the ALLTEL Team Penske Ford) did and we'll work together with his team
throughout the weekend," said Wallace. "The car we're racing
this weekend (the PC-34) is the one that we should have won with at Phoenix
last fall (led 4 times for 91 laps and was leading on lap 185 when the
right front tire went flat.was able to make up lost laps and finished
in the 15th spot), so we look to be really strong this weekend."
Wallace has become much the
Elvis trivia buff over the last few years. The St. Louis native won at
California Speedway last April to increase his winning streak to an amazing
16 consecutive seasons. Being the tour's most consistent winner is a fact
he is proud of. He is also observant of many similar accomplishments made
by Elvis.
"The King had 149 songs
that made the top-100 charts," said Wallace. "Of those, 114
were in the top 40, 40 were in the top 10, and 18 went to No. 1. His No.
1 singles spent a total of 80 weeks at number one. What's so amazing is
that he had hits in almost every category- pop, country and R & B.
Now, that's a helluva feat.
"Not only was Elvis a sensational recording artist, he ventured out
to succeed in all forms of the entertainment world," Wallace continued.
"He starred in 33 successful films, made history with his television
appearances and specials, and knew great acclaim through his many, often
record-breaking, live concert performances on tour and in Las Vegas.
"NASCAR Winston Cup Racing is as American as you can get and so is
Elvis," said Wallace. "Even though Elvis had tremendous success
world-wide, the fact is that Elvis did not record in other languages,
and, except for five shows in three Canadian cities in 1957, he did not
perform in concert outside the United States.
"I remember that the Elvis performances in Las Vegas were
unbelievable," Wallace said. "He'd do two shows a night for
five weeks straight and always to a jam-packed house. That's about as
demanding as our schedule these days, if you ask me. "As for Elvis
and me this weekend at Las Vegas, we'll hop in, buckle down and fire 'em
up.ready to rock and roll again," said Wallace. "Like they say....Viva
Las Vegas!"
Friday's qualifying session
to set the 43-car field for the UAW Daimler Chrysler 400 is scheduled
for 2:05 p.m. PST. Sunday's 267-lap, 400-mile race is set to begin at
12:30 p.m. PST, with Fox-TV and PRN Radio providing exclusive live coverage.
