TALLADEGA, Ala. (April 17,
2002) Rusty Wallace and his Miller Lite Team Penske will have their "PC-18"
Ford Taurus back in action once again in this weekend's Aaron's 499 at
Talladega Superspeedway.
"When Rusty finally wins one in that thing, they should name it
'Timex,'" offered Jamie Holderfield, an avid Rusty Wallace fan from
Sikeston, Mo., via an e-mail this week to one of Wallace's supporting
internet web sites. "That car certainly has taken a licking, but
it just keeps on ticking."
Holderfield's suggested name carries plenty of merit and would
definitely be considered should Wallace win Sunday's race and continue
his Penske Racing South tradition of naming his cars immediately after
their initial wins.
The crew used the car in February's action at Daytona as their primary
racer. But when Wallace was innocently caught up in a lap 10 crash in
his 125-mile qualifying race, the team was forced to call on their "PC-28"
backup car for the Daytona 500.
"We've had quite a bit of success with the car and have come so close
to winning with it," Wallace said. "It seems like they keep
on putting it back together and it's superior to the other speedway cars
with the aerodynamics and all. So, we'll be rolling her back out once
again this weekend at Talladega. We all feel that we can win with it."
The "PC-18" debuted in the 2000 Daytona 500 where Wallace started
fifth and finished fourth. He started 12th and finished third at Daytona
in the July 2000 race with the same car and drove it to an eighth-place
finish at Talladega in October 2000. In the 2001 season-opening Daytona
500, Wallace started the car 12th and made up a lap (lost because of a
right front flat only 28 laps into the race) en route to a third-place
finish. The team raced the car at Talladega in May 2001 where Rusty started
26th, led for three laps and finished 13th. The car was used in
the July 2001 Pepsi 400 at Daytona where Rusty started 24th and ran in
second-place for much of the race before finishing in the seventh spot.
It was used again at Talladega last October where Wallace crashed in practice
and had to resort to a backup Ford Taurus.
