FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
MOORESVILLE, NC (August 7, 2009)--The National Motorsports Press Association (NMPA) today announced their 2009 candidates for the NMPA Stock Car Hall of Fame. Among the list of five candidates is former NASCAR Cup Series champion and 55-time race winner, Rusty Wallace.
Wallace is the only driver among the list of five 2009 candidates, which includes famed car owners Roger Penske, Jack Roush and Robert Yates, as well as championship engine builder Waddell Wilson.
The NMPA Stock Car Hall of Fame, located on the hallowed grounds of Darlington Raceway in South Carolina, was established in 1965. Each candidate that receives votes on at least 65 percent of the ballots cast will be elected to the NMPA Hall of Fame. In the event that no candidate receives the required votes, the leading candidate (or candidates, in the event of a tie) will be elected.
Two of the other most significant honors in auto racing are also awarded by the NMPA: the Richard Petty Driver of the Year award and the Myers Brothers Award, which recognizes outstanding lifetime contributions to motorsports. Rusty Wallace is a past recipient of both honors; he is a two-time Driver of the Year Award winner and earned the Myers Brothers Award in 2005, following his retirement from driving.
